We have two tags that try to separate the differences: tex-core is about format-independent questions involving TeX the language, and so it can be used for LaTeX questions involving TeX primitives. plain-tex is about the plain TeX format, and is mainly there for people who use it so that their questions don't get lost in the sea of LaTeX questions. So if ...

Every question has to be tagged, but it's possible for all valid tags to 'vanish'. This is most obviously true for migration but can also occur if tag cleanup removes a tag. In these cases questions will be marked 'untagged'.

Note that you can not actually use plain tex in latex. plain is a different format defined in plain.tex which is not input into the latex format. There are of course some macros with the same name in both plain and latex and (some) of those have the same definition, but it's not really plain tex whatever you do. So if you want to ask how to do a floating ...

In the case of list environments, questions and answers about one specific type (enumerate, itemize, ...) will often be useful for other types as well. Examples are Q+A's about spacing or page breaks before or after lists, spacing between list items, indentation of item labels, ... Therefore, the tag descriptions of enumerate, itemize, and description ...

The unannounced change should be reverted as soon as possible. I would even remove boldface from the current tab name, normally active, because the rule under the tab name is sufficient. Boldface is a device to be used very sparingly, because it catches attention: with the current setup, tags are more prominent than question titles.

There is a difference between cosmetics that TeX should perform and cosmetics that purely rely on the typesetters choice. If the question is about how to turn on/off ligatures, implement auto kerning hyphenation, letterine, ornaments etc. or the specification is given and don't know how to realize in terms of TeX then it is obviously on-topic. But if it ...

The tagging approach taken here is quite deliberate. Whilst TeX-sx covers the TeX world generally, LaTeX is by far the dominant format in use (plain TeX and ConTeXt are much less widely used). As such, it was clear from the earliest days of the site that questions should be treated as about LaTeX unless they are explicitly not. Thus we have tags such as ...

Honestly the SE sites have generally very good designs and very nice choices in regards to how things appear, but the tag change is really a punch in the eye. The tags now are as black as the text, making them virtually indistinguishable from the text at a first sight. I'll just say this: Using bold for everything is like using the highlighter pen for the ...

I've seized the initiative and created the abnt tag. I just assigned it to a question that clearly falls in the scope of the tag. I leave to our Brazilian friends, so fond of their beloved ABNT, to retag other questions.

Turned my comment into an answer so it can be downvoted as well. I'd vote for option 3, that is to say a new tag els-cas. It seems to me that elsarticle and cas-... classes are sufficiently different to warrant a new tag. elsarticle is thoroughly LaTeX2e, while els-cas makes heavy use of LaTeX3's expl3 and xparse. It might help to add cas-sc and cas-dc as ...

I think the main site looks a little bit silly now. In the following screenshot, the things encircled in red need to be bold as well. The content of the blue circle needs to be super-mega-bold to fit again. Just reverting the bold tags to normal would be easier and better, though.

Looking at https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/epslatex shows that the questions tagged epslatex are about gnuplot's epslatex output (which generates an EPS file with a tex fragment with a picture environment overlaying latex typeset text). So I just edited the tag wiki to say that is what the tag is for.... https://tex.stackexchange.com/tags/...

We tracked down the bug. The Tex community has a few special classes for text formatting and those happened to conflict with a recent mixin that was added to a global file. The change was unintentional and an update is rolling out soon. Thanks for the catch and your patience.

I think that index should be made a synonym of indexing, and index-package should be created for the package, as barbara suggests. This is similar to the situation with citing and cite-package.

Certainly if a tag is added qed should be the tag name rather than tombstone, but I think the existing theorems tag should be fine, although several questions asking about this do not currently have the theorem tag and could have that tag added

I think that this name change is unfortunate and should be changed again. It is very common for (especially new) users to use latex-project for any question related to any part of the tex system, whether a problem with a specific package or with an editor or general latex syntax. Almost invariably someone then does a tag edit to remove the tag. On this ...

There are now only five questions in the untagged tag. I've edited all the ones I could to get rid of that tag (and otherwise improve them). The ones that are left are closed (4 out of the 5) or a duplicate (1 out of the 5; it's merged with another question, I think) so I cannot edit them. I don't know if this is an "amount of rep" thing; if so, maybe ...

Let's take a look at the numbers of postings with various Mac-related tags: mac 559 macos 44 mactex 482 texshop 495 % a Mac-only front end latexian 13 % another Mac-only front end macros 5752 % "macros" is among the "top ten" of all tags on TeX.SE The majority of the 44 macos-tagged postings is not actually related to MacOS (the ...

First of all, the tags represented on the Users page is dependent on the current time filter. So, you might see a different set of tags under each user depending on whether you filter by week, month, quarter, year or overall. Now, let's focus on the tags displayed under your user when filtering by week: You've earned 120 reputation this week. Nice. Your ...

It seems pretty much irredeemably broken. Looking over the first few questions tagged that way it seems to cover stretchy symbols \left\right stuff could be tagged delimiters if not already large file sizes could be tagged memory or database or ... box sizing stuff. could be tagged boxes if not already I suppose if someone is bored on a rainy afternoon ...

Actually you might consider making them both aliases for brackets which covers much the same ground, for example this question only has the brackets tag and has parenthesis in the title Universal Parentheses

This should now be done: wolfram-mathematica set up. I've removed the old tag.

In my opinion they should not be synonyms but the minion tag should be removed and questions retagged to minionpro or fontspec. UPDATE: I have retagged all questions in minion and myriad (which I stumbled upon) and pinged the moderators to remove the tags. It doesn't make sense to have tags for different font faces because there are infinitely many. At ...

You are right, the ducks tag is quite pointless outside of Meta. Since ducks are sort of an inside joke on TeX.SX, I have retagged all the ducks questions (following the same reasoning as in A proposal to include a duck in our background image).

I suspect that there are many tags like that. I'm of two minds about these kinds of tags. Another way of thinking of them that is different from the 'grab bag' characterization, is that they are context-dependent tags. Another one is the examples tag. This tag is often added to linguistics questions since the major linguistics packages are designed for ...

The columns tag description says: {columns} is specifically about columns in {tables} (though often the latter tag will suffice). If your question is about {two-column} documents or the {multicol} package, use the respective tag instead. Hence, columns is for tables, sometimes it is wrongly used for two-column documents. When you see a post with the wrong ...

The confusion between the distinction between {wrap} and {float} is an instance of the confusion caused by the difference in terminology between LaTeX and ConTeXt. LaTeX has a separate environment for wrapfigure and figure while ConTeXt treats both as instance of float and the behavior is chosen based on the value of the location key. Neither one is right, ...

I am just an occasional visitor here, but I thought I should take the time to revive this discussion and provide a readers point of view: The code tags are a mess. I was looking for interesting questions regarding source code formatting and highlighting within latex documents. I came across sourcecode, but realized soon that most of these questions (but ...

Yes, they should: datetime has been declare obsolete and not any more maintained. It is still in the distributions for allowing compilation of older documents without needing to change them. The new package datetime2 is different and incompatible with its predecessor, so questions dealing with it should not be confused with those referring to the obsolete ...
